And once you’re in battle, there are so many “best strategies” generally found such as strategic stunning, too many to even count. In town, you can find the best ways to reduce stress, the best hamlet upgrades, the most important buildings to upgrade. Get the best quirks locked in, find synergistic party compositions, memorize what enemy does what and who you should prioritize. You can make plans for the best provisions, optimize your party for whatever locale you’re visiting. Darkest Dungeon provides so many ways for you to optimize yourself. To start, what do I even mean by metagaming anyway? What I mean is that in a game such as this, with a variety of choices and strategies, people will inevitably find the strongest one. So how is the difference split? How does Darkest Dungeon prevent metagaming from taking away from its world? However, the game also wants to engage you with choices, and the developers clearly understand that nobody is going to want to play a game where they don’t have a decent amount of control, because endless brutal hardship that you can’t even start to mitigate would be tiring. The game is clearly meant to be about making the best of a bad situation, and being totally in control and optimal doesn’t really help with that. The aesthetics and tone are all dark, dreary, not very hopeful. This game clearly does not want you to feel powerful, at all. It’s great fun, and gives you a real sense of accomplishment and power… which is a serious problem in Darkest Dungeon. I’m sure plenty of you have enjoyed something like XCOM because the game gives you so many factors to play around with, and you get to try to find what the best strategies are that will steamroll the enemy. It’s a normal, understandable, and usually pretty positive part of game design, really. It is, however, also a game meant to engage the player through stats, strategy, and when you give players the means, they will indeed start to metagame the whole process. Every part of the game is meant to reinforce this, from heroes getting stressed to the harsh damage rolls, and the quirks and fears they develop as a result. Darkest Dungeon is a game about how adventuring and glory seeking is incredibly dangerous and harmful.
